There are various job positions for hospitality graduate/ diploma holders in hotel and allied industries. Some of the job positions are historically and properly defined. But in recent years new designations have been created based on some industry or organization specific requirement. For example, in any star or deluxe hotels, there should be Hotel Manager, Restaurant Manager, Food and Beverage Manager, Event Manager, Sales and Marketing Manager, Front Office Manager, Executive Chef, Housekeeping Manager etc. are very common. The job roles of these positions are traditionally well defined.
Job positions also describe the job responsibility of the staff. For example, a hotel manager is responsible to oversee the daily operations of the hotel, including managing staff, budgeting and overall guest satisfaction. A Restaurant manager will take care of day-to-day operations of the restaurant along with staff management, budgeting and guest handling. F & B Manager will be responsible for departmental management together with menu planning, purchase and inventory management. Event Manager will make plan and execute various events, such as Conference, Parties, and Seminars etc.
Executive Chef will oversee the kitchen operations, along with menu planning, food preparation and staff management of the hotel or restaurant. A Housekeeping manager is responsible for rooms cleaning, decoration linen and laundry services for the guests of the hotel. Front Office manager of a hotel will manage front desk operations, reservation, guest check-in & out, and also manage guest complaint. Marketing and Sales manager on the other hand is responsible for promoting the organization by various sales & marketing strategies to increase the business revenue.
Beside these defined positions, there are various tailor made positions offered by the hotel industry. These positions are based on specific requirements of the organization leading to different skill requirement of the candidate along with a degree or diploma in hotel management. Thus the industry for hotel and hospitality, offers a wide range of career opportunities and a student can choose a job role based on their interests and skills.

Kolkata is one of the most vibrant cities of the world. It is the capital city of West Bengal, which has been historically treated as an important metropolis in India for its economic, cultural, social contribution and also for its Geo-political importance. Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of West Bengal report shows huge growth in the number registered hotels; in 2019 the total number of registered hotels in the state was 71000 has reached to 87000 in 2022. Kolkata alone contributes 67% of total registered hotels for the state.

The average salary of a Hotel General Manager in Kolkata can range Rs. 12 lakh to 24 lakh per year. The salary range of a Food & Beverage manager is 8-10 lakh per annum. Similarly a restaurant manager earns 6 – 8 lakh per year, in Kolkata. An Executive Housekeeper gets 3.5 – 4.5 lakh salary per year. Hotel Front Office Manager gets 4 – 7 lakhs yearly salary. Executive Chef gets 7 – 12 lakh salaries per year. Salary of Event Manager gets 12 – 14 lakhs. Sales & Marketing Managers gets 18 – 20 lakhs per year.
